Introduction
Here at AV-W, student mastery of knowledge and skills has been strengthened through implementation of the EL Education model. As an EL school, our curriculum draws upon EL Core Practices. Learning is active, public, meaningful, challenging, and collaborative. Our core content is mapped to the Wisconsin Academic State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and Common Core State Standards, ensuring rigor within a 21st century learning model.
Our curriculum is student-centered and emphasizes depth over breadth, promoting learning for students with various learning styles, interests, and abilities. The majority of content in core classes is taught through expeditions, complemented with case studies.
In the sections below we will explore our achievement results within the dimensions of knowledge and skills. We will provide specific examples of how best practices have supported both reading and math proficiency and share evidence of success.

Reading ProficiencyClaim 1: AV-W students have grown in their proficiency in their reading and the value of reading in their lives.Demonstrate Proficiency and Deeper Understanding
Evidence of Reading Proficiency“This claim ties nightly reading and state test scores to increased proficiency and the value of reading. If students did not value reading, we would not have so many of them consistently reading every night and because significant numbers of our students are reading each night, our reading test scores have increased over time. Due to the rise in test scores and nightly reading, overall learning is enhanced across all content areas, as well as in and out of school. Reading is valued by students and families. “ ~ Mrs. Steiner (Resource Teacher)

Math ProficiencyClaim 2: AV-W students have grown in their proficiency in numeracy by growing their skills and growth mindset skills as mathematicians.Apply Their Learning
Evidence Of Math Proficiency“This claim means that our students have learned numeracy skills and are supported to analyze their errors and to understand and articulate their patterns of errors in order to improve understanding and performance. Students collect and analyze data of personal error patterns from assessments and use craftsmanship to produce work they are proud of. Our AVW math teaching allows students to progress academically. Our students have the ability to use their math skills and thinking skills as mathematicians to be productive citizens. This is supported by our math test scores and reflections of student skills including how to improve and what to be proud of.”

Remarkable AchievementClaim 3: AV-W American Indian students thrive in the literate and numerate culture of the school.Demonstrate Proficiency and Deeper Understanding
Evidence Of Remarkable Achievement“American Indian students at AV-W are immersed in a culture of literacy and mathematics. We are relentlessly compassionate in helping students succeed emotionally, socially and academically. This includes supporting families in their journey at AV-W, which can at times be daunting, given the historically negative experiences too many previous generations of American Indian children have had with the educational system.
American Indian students are able to thrive in this environment because of the high expectations for all students and supports at many levels. All students, regardless of cultural background, are a part of the our AV-W Crew, and are encouraged to be their best selves, celebrated along with their achievements, and encouraged as they work through the challenges inherent in powerful learning. The achievement of the American Indian population at AV-W on state tests, in comparison with the American Indian population in other local schools as well as other schools around the state, is phenomenal. They are being equipped with skills, habits, and tools that will help them achieve personal greatness.” ~ Mr. Smith (4th Grade Teacher) Remarkable achievement trends for specific subgroup populations in the school aligned to performance benchmarks and EL’s academic standard.
